Internship Opportunity

Fourth Environment is a small, creative consultancy in Houston, specializing in urban design and real estate development. I'm happy to say that business is steadily growing, and to help me tackle the workload I'm looking for a Summer Intern.

The main requirements for an intern are:

  1. Motivation and strong work-ethic.
  2. Serious computer savvy. Bonus points for Mac users.
  3. Graphic Design / Visual Communication Skill
  4. Writing ability

Assuming the basic foundation of computer and design skills are there, I'll be able to teach the rest. I expect the internship to involve a lot of teaching, and for it to be a chance for an individual to significantly broaden and deepen their professional skills.

The intern will get to work on a variety of real-world design and development related tasks, such as:

  • Urban Design (from small infill sites to large master-planned communities)
  • Financial Analysis (cash flow modeling for feasibility studies etc.)
  • Research (special emphasis on how design affects property values)
  • Presentations (including possible public speaking opportunities)
  • Publications (including opportunities for co-authorship)
  • Public Outreach (involvement in non-profit community activities)

The internship period will be from May through August, and be about 10-20 hours per week. Weekly schedule, start and end dates are flexible based on the intern's availability.

The internship is unpaid. However, this could turn into a full or part-time job after the internship. Basically, the more an intern can handle and bring in work, the faster the business will grow, and the sooner there will be room for a full-time partner. This is a pretty unique opportunity for a motivated individual.

How to Apply

To apply, please don't send me a resume. Instead, please send me an email with your name, current occupation or field of study, and written responses to these prompts:

  1. Tell me about your career passion. What do you hope to accomplish with your professional life, particularly in the next 10 years? How did this become your passion?
  2. Tell me about the most challenging built-environment project you've ever worked on. What the problem was and how did you solve it?
  3. Give me a list of software you're comfortable working with. Break it into four categories: fluent, proficient, comfortable, familiar.
  4. Tell me about your logistics for the summer. What dates you would be available and how many hours per week you would prefer to work?
  5. Tell me why I should pick you to be my intern. I see this as a position that could eventually grow into a full-time business partner. Why would you be the right person for that opportunity?

Email this to , and I'll follow up with you. Thanks!

Feedback from Past Interns

  • "I had a wonderful experience interning at Fourth Environment. The best part of the internship were my conversations with Andrew, who is fun to talk with and who is overflowing with knowledge and insight. The internship was a great opportunity for me, especially since I wanted to learn more about urban planning and real estate. I really enjoyed working on such a wide variety of projects, each at a different scale and stage of design. An added bonus was that Andrew taught me a lot about the business side of a design office. I would absolutely recommend this internship to any curious and passionate design students who want to broaden their educations and gain invaluable real-world experience." – Patrick Burnham
